Over the last few years the committee have often debated the use of Hi-Viz, reflective clothing and lights during our Winter or night-time club sessions. Over the last week we have done so again. The resultant vote has led to a policy change as I’ll detail below.
The TRC policy is now that the wearing of appropriate or reflective clothing (the current UKA definition replacing Hi-Viz), and/or lighting, for the attendance of all on road based club led sessions during our winter season or other night time sessions is MANDATORY.
This will include any sessions where traffic is likely to be encountered even if partially off road. ie. Some Friday night runs. We previously have taken a ‘SHOULD’ stance, and offered advice. I’d like to explain the reasons why we have taken this decision.
1) We would all agree I suspect that the traffic at our winter venues has become busier. Along with the increase in numbers at training this makes the probability of accidents occurring higher.
2) Our highest priority as a running club is for our members safety. In fact for our coaches and leaders this forms the primary part of their training.
3) Our coaches and leaders are directly responsible for your safety when you are in a group running with them. This is not to be taken lightly, and the committee supports our coaches in the same way we do with all our volunteers. Completely. They can be subject to disciplinary and legal action as a result of the decisions they make during our training evenings. This certainly includes ensuring that you are appropriately attired for the session they are taking.
4) We at TRC are behind the curve on many other clubs on this, both locally and nationally. I suspect this is partly because we have been extremely lucky not to have had any serious incidents. We can’t be complacent. Moving on to some obvious questions.
Cost? - Reflective clothing is generally affordable, and we’ve included links elsewhere to some options that might suit your needs. If affordability is an issue, please don’t hesitate to reach out, and the club will gladly assist in providing the necessary gear.
What if I forget my Hi-Viz? - Yes we’ve all done that. We plan to have some spare.
When does this begin? - Now. But with a common sense amnesty period where we will advise and assist as required.
Could I be turned away from training if I refuse? - Yes. In reality, for most of you, this change will make no difference. It’s common sense after all. You share our goal of keeping our training environments as safe, productive and fun as possible. Please continue to support us in this.
Our polices listed in the documents section of the website will be updated in due course to reflect this change.
Please keep in mind that our club’s insurance coverage is contingent on following these safety guidelines.
